The Capital of Massachusetts is Boston.  The State of Massachusetts was first settled at Plymouth in 1620 when the Pilgrims from the Mayflower settled.   Puritans within a decade had followed, establishing towns of Salem in 1628 and Boston in 1630.  The Massachusetts Bay Colony, founded in 1630, provided for a large amount of self-government.  Immigrants numbering more than 20,000 begin pouring into the are within the next decade mainly of British descend.   Religious intolerance in Massachusetts led many to settle elsewhere, i.e., Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Maine.  In 1691 Plymouth Colony was joined to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, as was parts of Maine and Nova Scotia.
During the Revolutionary War, Massachusetts played a prominent role from the Boston Tea Part to Lexington and Concord and the Battle of Bunker Hill.  In 1780, a State Constitution was adoped and Massachusetts became the sixth state to ratify the Constitution, witht he proviso that the Bill of Rights be added.
