Illinois was created as the Territory of Illinois in 1809 and later became the 21st State in 1818.  The first exployer of Illinois was Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet in 1673.  French established settlements in 1699 at Cahokia and Kaskaskia in 1703.  Illinois area was ceded to Great Britain in 1763 after the French and Indian War.  Many French settlers fled to St. Louis, Natchez, and other towns at this time.   Virginians became to migrate into this area in 1769 and it was attached to Quebec in 1774.   George Rogers Clark captured Kaskaskia dn Cahokia, during the Revolutionary War, securing the lands north of the Ohio River for the the United States.  Virgina claimed all the land north of the Ohil River for itself, but ceded it to the United States in 1784.   In 1787 Illinois became part of the Northwest Territory.  Some three years later, Illinois became part of the Indiana Territory.  Then Illinois Territory was formed in 1809, with Wisconsin region being transferred to the Michigan Territory in 1818.   .  In the year 1818, Illinois became the 21st  state with Springfield as its capital.
