Introduction

The Diary(s) of Rhoda Spradling Totty is being provided here for those who are researching the TOTTY family and their friends, neighbors and families.
These are exact words as written by my great great grandmother in her own penmanship the only change(s) made are Capital or UPPER Case Letters on mentioned surnames or my comments in brackets [BTM].      The Diary(s) have been in private ownership by the TOTTY family all these years, and have never been published, or copied with the exception of excerpts printed in 1957 in the  "CENTENNIAL Forestburg, Texas a History of Forestburg Cattle and Watermelon Center" [Montague County] .
This is the FIRST time that the Diary(s) have ever been released with permission and "exclusive rights" in their entirety to anyone.    I am very honored to be the one given this priviledge.   I believe these diaries should be Shared by our families to help document and learn about our ancestory and how they lived and died in the 1800's.  I hope to do that by publishing the diaries.   They span 22 years of Rhoda SPRADLING TOTTY's life from May 9, 1876 to her death in April 1899.   Births, deaths, burials, marriages and the weather are documented throughout the books on many families and neighbors in Montague County, Texas.  Rhoda has a unique way of writing her thought's down for us to see what happened on a day to day basis.

of Rhoda Spradling Totty

November 1877

November the 1st Day       big rain this morning    wind from north to night     Bart and Tilda come to night
2 Day   Johns birth day  30 to day   Mrs Cross and Mrs Young and me ...isit   had " a very pleasant time  Cool to night    I .... T..... and ..... all night     Allan fell in the C..........
[BTM]  this would be my great grandfather John Whitfield TOTTY's birthday.  It is so exciting reading about the everyday happenings in the life of our ancestors.  Makes them closer now that we are getting to know more about them   Mrs Young may likely be the neighbor of John & Anna Harvill on the 1880 census she is listed as Jane age 53 (widow) born in Alabama as were her parents. She had a daughter Severe age 20 and a son Heggs age 25 both born in Texas.  Mrs Cross would likely be the neighbor of Rhoda and Capt. living in HH# 371/372 on the 1880 Census.

November the  3 Day     Bart went after Cox for Louisas baby    Tilda Staying with me to night    Frank and Alen hauled corn   been one clear day   feel bad to night   looked for the old man and Pea     they did not come
[BTM]  the baby is most likely Frank TOTTY GAGE, son of Louise and Ben.    Matilda staying with Rhoda while her husband Bart goes for the Doctor.

This concludes the Diary for the year 1877.   The month of December 1877 is completly gone due to deteroriation from the old brittle papers.   As you can see even parts of the month of November was almost all gone, but I tried to transcribe ALL the above diary entries by Rhoda has she wrote them and as I could read them to transcribe.
