Introduction

The Diary(s) of Rhoda Spradling Totty is being provided here for those who are researching the TOTTY family and their friends, neighbors and families.
These are exact words as written by my great great grandmother in her own penmanship the only change(s) made are Capital or UPPER Case Letters on mentioned surnames or my comments in brackets [BTM].      The Diary(s) have been in private ownership by the TOTTY family all these years, and have never been published, or copied with the exception of excerpts printed in 1957 in the  "CENTENNIAL Forestburg, Texas a History of Forestburg Cattle and Watermelon Center" [Montague County] .
This is the FIRST time that the Diary(s) have ever been released with permission and "exclusive rights" in their entirety to anyone.    I am very honored to be the one given this priviledge.   I believe these diaries should be Shared by our families to help document and learn about our ancestory and how they lived and died in the 1800's.  I hope to do that by publishing the diaries.   They span 22 years of Rhoda SPRADLING TOTTY's life from May 9, 1876 to her death in April 1899.   Births, deaths, burials, marriages and the weather are documented throughout the books on many families and neighbors in Montague County, Texas.  Rhoda has a unique way of writing her thought's down for us to see what happened on a day to day basis.

……child                 I am feeling badly    face swelled
[BTM] 3RD Day   Rhoda must have a badly infected tooth for her face to be swollen.  Either her neighbor Mrs Laura Simpson had company or the TOTTY family did, it is hard to tell from these bits and pieces of the diary.  The main mode of transportation seemed to be either by horse or wagon.   I love sitting and making a  picture in my mind of Lillie sitting behind her “Pap” on the horse as she goes off to school.  When I get caught up a little, I will have to get my paint and brushes out and paint some of these pictures to illustrate Rhoda’s diary(s), they are a wonderful inspiration in more ways than one to me.

…..Day     geting warm again   Douthit plowing..    Mr Totty
….s and reading the Videte      I Scaled my hand  fear it
…very sore     Frank plowing for his pap
[BTM] 4th Day  She must be talking about Mr. Totty reading the paperwork in regard to the Dr. Norris murder.    Julius DOUTHET is found on the 1880 Montague Co. Census in HH# 264/295 as engineer, and Thomas DOUTLET in HH# 274/305 as a farmer, most likely neighbor Thomas is the one who is plowing.  Everyone getting the ground ready for spring planting.

[BTM]  This would be May 5, 1879, Betties 27th birthday.

……….ry  time it is done.
[BTM]  Date unknown.   The new Gov in office on Jan 21, 1879 was Oran M. Roberts.    Judge Carrol must have been the local area Criminal Judge that Rhoda and her neighbors were upset with, over the hanging of Nofsinger.
